About Ms. Bryant

Ms. Bryant was raised in a family devoted to serving others. Her father was a doctor, and her mother led a life dedicated to community initiatives. Because of Ms. Bryant's upbringing and the example set by her parents, serving her community has become a cornerstone of her life. Her parents taught her the importance of connecting with people and what is happening in their lives. Through her own struggles in life as a blind and African American woman, she has a deep understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized groups and the need for empathic understanding.

Throughout her career, Ms. Bryant has gravitated toward work that helped others. She worked at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), enforcing the Telecommunications Act. While at the FCC, she served in the International Bureau, among other divisions, and was pleased to work with Native American communities as the senior counsel in the Office of Native Affairs and Policy.

Ms. Bryant is dedicated to expanding her knowledge through continuing education, and her motto is: "Keep on moving; there's a lot to learn." She has multiple certifications and is a member of various civic organizations, including the Association for Conflict Resolution and the National Industries for the Blind. She is a former president of the Benjamin Hooks Chapter of Blacks in Government and sits on the board of the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence, Kansas.

As a leader in her field, Ms. Bryant has a leadership style that has served her well. It involves an empathetic and realistic view of not only others, but herself. Throughout her career, she learned the importance of recognizing and listening to others and being willing to draw on their strengths.

"Being a leader is acknowledging your own humanity, that you're not perfect, that you need others to broaden your perspective, to understand what's going on around you. I think part of leadership is first and foremost understanding your strengths, but also understanding where you need to do your work," says Ms. Bryant.

The Importance of Empathy and Understanding

Ms. Bryant's current writing project is a book that emphasizes the importance of sensory mindfulness. As a visually impaired person, she has firsthand experience with how important empathy is for fully understanding others. She points out that around 85% of people perceive the world through their eyes and highlights the importance of looking beyond their senses when communicating with others.

"Listening means the skill to get in close and understand someone, but to do that, we can't just judge from afar with our eyes. We need to move in close and understand the other, and that requires us to use our other senses. We just need to understand where the other is coming from. It's not giving up yourself; it's incorporating what you're learning about someone else," Ms. Bryant says.
