Hillsdale College Hosts Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association

Members of the Michigan Outdoor Writer’s Association hosted their annual conference at Hillsdale College’s John Anthony Halter Shooting Sports Education Center and Camp Michindoh between June 2 and June 5. Indoor lectures were balanced with outdoor bass fishing, hiking, and clay shooting. Attendees also enjoyed catered meals, discussions, and guided tours.

MOWA is a non-profit organization of editors, writers, cartoonists, and photographers whose subject matter regards the outdoors. These communicators who focus on fishing, hunting, and shooting-sports-related content partnered with Hillsdale College’s Nimrod Education Center.

“We were pleased to host this event involving some of the top outdoor writers in the country. They were exposed to the high-quality activities associated with Hillsdale College,” said Al Stewart, Nimrod Education Center Director. “Participants met with Hillsdale College shotgun team members like Ida Brown who is a national and international shotgun award winner and Josh Corbin who is a national shotgun award winner. We also had the pleasure of meeting with USA Olympic Shooting staff who make the Halter Shooting Education Center their home.”

During MOWA’s visit to Hillsdale College, Olympic gold medalist William Shaner honored Stewart and former MOWA president Tom Huggler for their work with the Hal and Jean Glassen Foundation which created an endowment to sponsor the USA Shooting Junior Olympics Team. Stewart serves as the current vice president and Huggler serves as the president of the foundation.

Writers participated in shotgun competitions at Halter and fishing competitions. MOWA honored select attendees during a Clean Waters Award Presentation and MOWA Craft Awards ceremony. Stewart emphasized the goals of the Nimrod Education Center to the members of MOWA. In particular, Stewart discussed the Nimrod Society’s mission to inform citizens about the contributions that anglers and hunters make to conservation.

MOWA member and Fulbright Program Writing Scholar, Jacob VanHouten said, “This meeting was well-organized, well-hosted, and an all-around good time!”
