CCC to Issue Updates to Market Report on Scholarly Metadata at the Society for Scholarly Publishing Annual Meeting

The Newest Edition of The State of Scholarly Metadata Report Will Provide an Updated Snapshot of the Current Metadata Supply Chain and Highlight Industry Initiatives to Improve Metadata Management Across the Research Lifecycle

CCC, a leader in advancing copyright, accelerating knowledge, and powering innovation, announces that the newest edition of The State of Scholarly Metadata report, which depicts the complexities and value of scholarly publishing metadata, will be made available at the 2024 Society for Scholarly Publishing (SSP) 46^th Annual Meeting 29-31 May at the Westin Boston Seaport District.

The CCC team will be in Booth #403 to unveil recent updates to The State of Scholarly Metadata interactive report, which includes a snapshot of the current metadata supply chain and an examination of the significant economic and social impact for researchers, institutions, funders, and publishers on the journey to Open Access (OA). Based on direct input from the community, the report now showcases important initiatives working to improve metadata management. The report will be available online via the CCC website.

CCC is also hosting four sessions at the SSP Annual Meeting:

• 29 May at 12:00 – 12:30 pm EDT – Data in the Driver’s Seat: Using Data to Steer Your OA Business Strategy – CCC’s Jamie Carmichael and Shannon Reville will share recent feedback CCC has heard from publishers investing in OA business models about the key data points and enrichment practices they leverage to inform their strategy.
  
  
  
  
• 30 May at 1:30 – 2:30 pm EDT – Measuring Progress: A Visual Look at Initiatives Supporting Metadata Stewardship – CCC’s Jessica Thibodeau will demonstrate recent updates to The State of Scholarly Metadata interactive report as part of SSP’s Posters Presentations.
  
  
  
  
• 31 May at 9:00 – 10:15 am EDT – OA Intelligence: Innovation Through Automation – In SSP’s annual Previews session, Carmichael will highlight how CCC’s OA Intelligence helps automate publishers’ data enrichment, modeling, and analysis efforts to accelerate their OA strategy.
  
  
  
  
• 31 May at 11:00 am – 12:00 pm EDT – Crowdsourcing a GenAI Prompt on the Future of Scholarly Publishing: “Tell Me How to Implement AI Solutions While Staying True to My Values” – This panel, moderated by Martin Delahunty, includes Simone Taylor, American Psychiatric Association; Tiffany Lazo, Regeneron Pharmaceuticals; and Avi Staiman, Academic Language Experts. They will lead the audience in creating a GenAI prompt to give SSP guidance on the future of scholarly publishing. Participants in this interactive session will develop prompt writing skills while reflecting on the collision of technology and publishing principles.

CCC recently hosted “Publishers, Copyright & AI: Taking Action” at the 2024 London Book Fair where executives from leading scholarly publishers discussed topics at the intersection of publishing, copyright, and AI. The London Book Fair panel followed a series of CCC Town Hall events on the topic of AI:

• “The Heart of the Matter: Copyright, AI Training and LLMs,” where experts discussed technical and legal aspects of the use of copyrighted content in AI systems.
• “AI, Collective Licensing and the Path Forward,” which focused on how voluntary collective licensing is a proven way to use large collections of copyrighted materials with permission, and why AI technologies must address important concerns over equity, transparency, and authenticity.
• “ChatGPT & Information Integrity” explored the evolving nature of originality and authenticity in the world of AI and discussed the rapid growth of generative AI tools.
