"The Urban Helper" Launches in Los Angeles

Hyperlocal skill and time trade web platform seeks to build community, while reducing carbon emissions.
LOS ANGELES - May 31, 2018 - PRLog -- The Urban Helper has recently launched its first hub in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The platform, founded by CEO Charlotte Culina, connects people who need services with people who can provide those services – right in their own neighborhoods, while also removing financial obstacles.

"I wanted to make something that would facilitate getting work done in a hyperlocal community—something that would even reward hirers for hiring that way," shared Culina.

Culina, a mother of 2 and a happily retired TV commercial/video producer, founded The Urban Helper because it:

1. Strengthens communities
2. Is inclusive of demographics most entrepreneurs ignore, such as retirees
3. Removes financial obstacles and facilitates social change by allowing not only the exchange of dollars, but also utilizing a time based currency called U-Brix

The company is founded on the principal that your neighbors are a crucial social network -- the people who are closest, are often the best positioned to know when something is wrong, or to help in an immediate crisis, no matter how big or small.

Culina explains The Urban Helper thusly: "Knowledge exchange is an organic part of traditional neighborliness and one that is mutually beneficial to all parties. But your neighbors need to know what your skills are—and vice versa—before you can exchange them. The Urban Helper provides a comprehensive, functional platform to build awareness of the skilled neighbors who are just outside your door."

Although users can charge an hourly rate for their services, a fundamental part of The Urban Helper is the option to pay in "U-Brix" – a time-related currency (1 hour = 1 U-Brix) that can be used as payment for services. Culina designed this to remove financial obstacles, and encourage skill-trading through an accountable pay it forward model.

"We feel that our transparent, equitable business model is the way of the future for entrepreneurs. Profit is obviously part of the equation, but we feel that in order to be truly sustainable we must be honest and fair with all of our users. It shouldn't be revolutionary to think this way, but it is!"
