Celebratory Award Event To Take Place Thursday, June 7, 2018
WASHINGTON - June 4, 2018 - PRLog -- Dedicated to supporting global initiatives to protect the plant universe and biodiversity, the Klorane Botanical Foundation, Klorane's corporate foundation, and national non-profit KidsGardening, leader in the school gardening movement, are proud to announce Eagle Academy Public Charter School as a winner of the inaugural Budding Botanist Grant. The Grant helps our youngest citizens value their environment, explore the plant world, and inspires them to take care of the life they discover in their local ecosystems.
One of six winning schools across the country, Eagle Academy Public Charter School has been awarded a Budding Botanist Grant package valued at $3000 in cash and supplies to provide resources for creating important learning gardens with their students. The school was selected for its commitment to teaching environmental sustainability and biodiversity and will utilize the Budding Botanist Grant to support their goal to launch a school garden program as a key component of an overall Environmental Literacy Plan. The school is also working with many community nonprofits and organizations to launch the new garden program.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Integration Specialist Karen Brooks-Bauer explains, "We have three big goals: living and learning sustainably, appreciating our natural environment near and far, and understanding where our food comes from." In addition to starting a school-wide recycling and composting program, the students will focus on learning how strong local food systems are an important part of healthy and sustainable living.
Brooks-Bauer continued, "In our urban setting, many students lack experience in the outdoors and have developed hesitancy around being outside. In addition to their daily recess. we want students to spend more time in the outdoors. These outdoor garden-based classrooms will help to foster an appreciation of the natural environment, giving children the opportunity to learn in a green space, in addition to their traditional classroom."
On Thursday, June 7, the Klorane Botanical Foundation and KidsGardening will help host an award ceremony and garden project at the school in celebration of receiving the Budding Botanist Grant, and to raise awareness around the impact of teaching children to protect nature through growing, caring for and living with plants.
