The recent E. coli contamination of romaine lettuce originating in Yuma, Arizona has rightfully raised serious consumer and industry concerns. Boggiatto Produce encourages the public to always be alert to the latest FDA notifications regarding specific food safety problems and identified origins.

By mid-April, the Arizona Department of Agriculture and the FDA confirmed that no more romaine lettuce had been shipped from the Yuma region. Initial industry response was swift in assisting the FDA investigation. Those involved were uniquely positioned to help analyze critical processing, handling and shipping data.

Boggiatto President Jeffrey Hitchcock emphasizes that the industry works constantly to ensure the highest possible food safety standards. "Our first line of defense starts with our responsibility for ongoing employee training." At Boggiatto, this regimen includes everything from field operations and harvesting techniques to packing and shipping practices. Compliance to standards in all areas is strictly enforced.

Boggiatto food safety strategies cover field prep before and after planting as well as regular inspection of all acreage including fields not currently in production. The company carefully manages water resources and regularly performs risk assessments on system reservoirs, wells and canals. Both soil and water are constantly monitored for any microbial indicators of contamination.

Proud of his company's food safety practices, Hitchcock strongly believes in the effectiveness of independent safety audits. "We built our in-house food safety program with scientists who hold advanced degrees in food technology. We also contract independent third-party auditing through PrimusGFS, and we're under constant scrutiny from local, state and federal government regulatory agencies."

On June 6, Boggiatto and other industry leaders joined a task force with LGMA. All parties are focused on analyzing and evaluating the recent response of both the FDA and the industry. According to a source closely involved in the work, the goal is to formulate a better and faster data-driven process that addresses production issues and ensures consumer safety. "We're committed to integrating the latest in science and technology to keep all produce safe from field to table. The public expects and deserves nothing less."
