However, this means that eventually, our telomeres will also reach a critical limit. After a certain number of replications, the telomeres cannot become any shorter without damaging the actual chromosomes. At this point, the cell may no longer be able to divide. Reaching this critical minimum length can also change the very function of the cell, a process known as "senescence."
