Corona, CA Release January 25th, 2021.

Highlighting recent milestones and advancements in electric flight, BWI Aviation Insurance owner Matt White speaks to the future of electric flight and the potential impact on the electric aircraft insurance market.

For Immediate release

On August 30th, 2020, a Pipistrel Velis Electro aircraft took off from Zurich, Switzerland, and headed for the skies over Germany for a record breaking flight. This was an electric aircraft that would traverse 435 miles across Germany before landing on the North Sea island of Norderney. Whereas the records regarding speed, altitude, and energy consumption might seem like small milestones compared to the accomplishments of jet aircraft, they are quietly moving the future of electric aircraft forward.

In a recent post to his BWI Aviation Insurance audience, owner Matt White speaks to the future of electric flight and its impact on the industry. “To many, it seems like flight has always been with us,” said White, “but in reality flight has advanced very rapidly over the past 100 years.” He went on to clarify that while electric aircraft are not common, they are becoming an increasingly large part of the market and he expects that market to grow going forward.

“At the end of the day, if it flies then we can likely find aviation insurance for it and electric aircraft are no different” said White. He envisions fleets of electric aircraft operating over the skies of America with longer battery lives and less pit stops from take off to destination. “It’s really just a matter of time as the history of flight tells us that you really can’t stop innovation or progress” added White. He encourages all potential owners or operators of electric aircraft to reach out to an experienced broker in order to be sure they have the proper coverage. Any aircraft that are considered experimental require custom policies.

While it remains to be seen exactly when electric aircraft will become mainstream, it is just a matter of time before they become a more common sight in the skies above America. This year’s record setting flight over Germany was the first in many more record shattering sorties to come. The emphasis on green and clean fuel use is likely to propel the electric aircraft industry to new heights.
