Mental Health SaaS Innovator, Help Texts, Humanizes Healthcare

Help Texts is available for people in need of expert, on-going support that works - people grieving after a death, healthcare workers facing burnout and people facing a terminal diagnosis.

More than a decade after her husband’s suicide, MIT-educated tech entrepreneur, Emma Payne, founded Help Texts to ensure “no one would ever have to grieve alone” (Lozano, 2020). Launched in 2018, with a focus on providing expert grief support after a death, Help Texts now delivers texts globally and has subscribers in 27 countries and 47 states. “Text is equity,” says Payne, who sees every day how hospice clients, as well as tissue banks, employers, healthcare providers, EAPs and grief organizations are using their text solution to meet the growing demand for bereavement care. “With a 19% increase in mortality rates from 2019 to 2020, and 6 month wait lists for people looking for grief support, we’re so pleased that we can make it really easy for people to access expert support for as long as they need it.”

With nothing to install or download, and a rich database of carefully curated, compassionate and practical tips and suggestions, Help Texts is seeing 95% acceptability rates from people who find the texts helpful as they grieve. While apps are struggling to keep people engaged, 90% of Help Texts’ subscribers elect to continue receiving text support for a full year. Texts are personalized based on cause of death, age, relationship and more, and are available in 20 languages, with specialized tracks for caregivers, teens, LGBTQ+ communities and more. With subscribers ranging in age from 13 to 88, Help Texts support has broad appeal. And it works.

Head of Product, Vanessa Callison-Burch came to Help Texts after a leadership role with Facebook’s memorialization team. She says her subscriber support team receives a constant flow of gratitude from grieving people who find text support works for them. “We hear every day from subscribers who tell us that our texts are helping them, and that they come at just the right time. I think that we do a great job making sure people feel seen in their grief, and also giving them expert tips and practical suggestions to find a path forward,” she says.

In 2021, as Payne and her team watched their healthcare clients losing staff to burnout and fatigue, they saw that it was time to extend their product lines beyond bereavement support. Help Texts closed a funding round in December, to accelerate their launch of Help Texts for Healthcare Professionals which goes live this month, as well as Help Texts after a Terminal Diagnosis, due to launch this Spring.
