A one-of-a-kind Boutique Winery that was founded with the goal of producing exceptional Italian wines.
Italy - April 10, 2023 —
Tenuta Morciano, a stunning boutique winery located in Umbria in central Italy, has a clear focus which is aimed at hand crafting world-class red and white wines from the historic Orvieto area.
Umbria lies in the heart of Italy, and is traversed by the talian Apennines north of Rome and east of Tuscany. Umbria is renowned for both its red and white wines. Wine making in the Orvieto area extends over at least 2,700 years and was an important economic activity during the Etruscan civilization. Numerous Etruscan tombs occur in and around Orvieto. Wine has long been associated with Italian culture, business, and health. Presently, the wine industry contributes significantly to many Italians' income and way of life.
According to the company, one of the initial concerns was to identify the most outstanding vineyards so that winemaking efforts could be concentrated on excellent vineyard locations. Tenuta Morciano comprises 30 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, and woodlands in Umbria that mostly face south and southwest and receives maximum sunlight throughout the spring and summer months.
The terroir is comprised of calcareous sands and clays which were deposited by an ancient ocean during the Pliocene period 5.3 to 2.6 million years ago. During this time, the area was covered by a warm ocean with abundant marine life and fossil shells are common within the soils. These abundant fossil shells result in calcareous sand and clay-rich soils which yield wines with nice complexity, structure and minerality.
Tenuta Morciano is located in the hills mid-way between Orvieto and Corbara lake which results in a distinct microclimate with significant day-night temperature changes. The hot days and cool nights result in wines with intense flavours with excellent structure and balance.
Everyone at Tenuta Morciano winery, is conscious of the fact that that they are stewards of an incredible piece of agricultural land with a history of grape production and winemaking dating back 2700 years. The winery employs a combination of traditional procedures and harvests all of their grapes by hand, selecting only the most perfect grapes and ensuring that the grapes remain intact until they are pressed just a few hours after being picked.
This unique winery ferments and matures all of its red and white wines in French oak barrels and uses cutting-edge technology to retain the natural quality of its wines. The company is devoted to ecologically responsible agricultural methods and winemaking techniques. The treatments in their vineyard are kept to a bare minimum by paying close attention to climatic trends and grape health.
Tenuta Morciano; Unique Italian Wines
The natural essence of their wines is the result of a decade-long global quest to identify the perfect terroir. Three new wines have recently been released: the Montemarte 2021 (Sauvignon Blanc) and Il Carrettiere 2021 (Viognier) wines have been aged in large 2500 litre French oak barrels for 12 months, resulting in crisp, fruity wines with a full body, long finish, and a balanced acidity. Unlike the commonly used smaller barrels, the larger barrels allow the wines to evolve, adding delicate notes without overpowering the primary aromas of the varietals.
- Il Carrettiere 2021: 100% viognier. Aromas of tropical fruit, peach, and stone fruit, with floral notes of rosehip. On the palate, the wine is round with a whole body, good persistence, and excellent balance.
- Montemarte 2021: 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Citrus notes, especially grapefruit, green apple, and herbal notes. The freshness is immediately evident on the palate, with herbaceous and green fruit flavors.
-Salto nel Buio 2021 100% Cabernet Sauvignon full-bodied with bold flavors, a deep ruby color and a complex bouquet of blackcurrant, cassis, and tobacco.
Tenuta Morciano is also noted for producing high-quality olive oil. The Tenuta Morciano oil has a nice blend of green and fruity flavors. The olive oil is blended from the Estates' olive trees, which include three different varieties: Frantoio, Leccino, and Moraiolo. Furthermore, their olives are hand harvested with pneumatic combs early in the season, when yields are lowest, but flavours are most potent.
