Induction Heating Machines | Power Plant Boiler Tube Removal Report Released

New Jersey-based engineering group Thermo International released a report detailing how their induction heating machines are being used to solve power plant challenges.

In the report, Thermo International explains how their induction heating machines were recently used to remove worn-out boiler tubes from a power plant. The machines rapidly change the physical properties of electrically conductive materials, making them more malleable and easy to maneuver.

Most power plants use large industrial boilers to produce the water and steam they need to operate. These large industrial boilers utilize 1000’s of tubes exposed to water and steam on the inside and high heat on the exterior. Over time, these tubes deteriorate and must be replaced. Traditionally, skilled technicians would use cutting torches to slice the tubes and then beat them out with a hammer and chisel. But, as Thermo International’s report details, induction heating machines can now be used instead.

Induction heating allows materials to be heated without them ever coming into contact with the inductor. The process utilizes electromagnetic fields generated by work coils which can heat materials up to as high as 2500 °F in as little as 30 to 90 seconds. At these temperatures, the tubes start to shrink within the tube sheet, which makes them easy to remove with or without a hydraulic puller.

According to the report, induction heating machines are also a much more clean, affordable, efficient, and precise method of removing worn-out boiler tubes. They reduce the safety risks and human labor costs involved with traditional methods. Additionally, because of the temperature control that induction heating machines offer, results are much more immediate, consistent, and repeatable.

“Induction heating machines are a smarter and more cost-effective way of removing boiler tubes, and they don’t entail a massive investment in new technology,” said a spokesperson for the company. “They're easy to set up, offer a fast time-to-temperature, and deliver exceptional heating efficiency, accuracy, and uniformity.”

Thermo International has a range of induction heating machines available both for purchase and rent. Their entire catalog is showcased on their website. To inquire about the machines, customers can either call or email their offices at the contacts provided.
