This year’s Dakar Rally was a major test of endurance for both crews and racing machinery. The truck drivers in the colors of the Buggyra ZM Racing team experienced this firsthand.
-- Despite serious technical problems, Martin Šoltys in the Buggyra Invictus truck and Karel Poslední behind the wheel of the Tatra Buggyra EVO3 achieved several excellent stage results, including multiple podium finishes for Šoltys.

Martin Koloc, head of the Buggyra ZM Racing team, was satisfied with the performance of the truck category. “We have speed, and we proved it in the second half of the Dakar. Martin Šoltys is excellent in the dunes and gets better every year. Circumstances don’t force him to do things beyond his or the car’s limits, and he knows exactly what he is doing,” he said.
The Buggyra boss also explained the causes of the technical problems in the first half of the rally. “For operational reasons, some components on the car were replaced. Strategic suppliers in the automotive industry are moving their production outside Europe one by one because they are no longer able to manufacture in Europe due to environmental regulations, restrictions, and costs. In addition, many of our original suppliers no longer exist. As a result, we replaced some components on the car and, unfortunately, found that these parts were not as good as the previous ones. We paid the price for that,” said Martin Koloc.
Overall, however, he remains satisfied with the performance of both trucks. “I think Martin Šoltys’s new car is working very well. The EVO3, driven by Karel Poslední, is also performing reliably. Karel is a driver with enormous potential, even though he started his racing career relatively late. He is a driver with a great future.”
Martin Šoltys took away both positive and negative experiences from this year’s Dakar. “The positive thing was mainly that if you don’t give up, even when people encourage you to, and if you really want to, you can fight your way through the Dakar. You should never give up. And the negative? I learned that you should never trust anyone. The equipment must be in perfect condition, and everything has to be checked and monitored at least two or three times,” said the experienced racer.
Dealing with technical issues from the very first stage was extremely frustrating. “We did well in the prologue, but in the first stage our turbo failed in the morning. That caused us to start far back, and we had to overtake a lot of cars in the dust. There were many slow buggies, and overtaking them in heavy dust is extremely dangerous,” recalled the Buggyra Invictus driver.
Šoltys lifted his spirits with excellent results in the final stages. “From the second marathon stage onward, when things started to go well, you could see that the mood in the crew improved dramatically. The atmosphere in the bivouac also got better, including among the mechanics. When things are going well, everyone enjoys it much more and rides the wave of euphoria,” added the driver of truck number 603.
Karel Poslední completed his second Dakar Rally. “It’s a great adventure. The guys were great, we got along well in the crew, and we’re already focused on the next Dakars and other competitions. The biggest negative were the emotions when the cars weren’t working and the first half of the rally felt so futile. That was very disappointing,” he said.
The trio in the Tatra Buggyra EVO3 cabin also went through a form of purgatory, dealing with a series of technical problems in the first half of the Dakar Rally. “It was extremely frustrating, and you have to process it mentally. You think about it all the time and start to lose trust in the car. That was one of the reasons why we didn’t drive the marathon stage,” explained Karel Poslední.
He made up for it in the final phase of the world’s toughest rally. “From the second half onward, it was great. We slowly started to trust the car again, even though it wasn’t working at one hundred percent. We really enjoyed the rest of the rally,” added Karel Poslední.
