Shincheonji Church of Jesus Announces Position on Verification of Political Membership Allegations

-- Shincheonji Church of Jesus released a statement addressing recent public allegations involving political party membership and election-related activities, citing concerns over speculative reporting based on unilateral claims by former members.

The allegations referenced in recent reports include claims of large-scale enrollment in political parties, as well as assertions of involvement in presidential and general elections. According to the church, these claims have been presented without verified evidence and do not reflect the organization’s structure or practices.

The church stated that it has never instructed members to join any political party, including the People Power Party or the Democratic Party of Korea, nor to engage in political activities. It further stated that organizational election involvement is neither structurally possible nor factually accurate.

Shincheonji Church of Jesus indicated that it does not monitor or control the political choices of individual members. Political participation is described as a personal right protected by the Constitution, and the organization stated that it does not collect or retain information regarding party membership or political activity.

In response to calls for factual clarification, the church announced its willingness to cooperate in a verification process based on objective comparison rather than speculation. The proposed process involves a simultaneous review comparing the church’s membership list with political party membership records across multiple parties, subject to individual consent and lawful procedures.

The church stated that verification, if conducted, should examine the circumstances under which any identified individuals joined political parties, including whether any organizational instruction existed. Participation in internal party elections would also be subject to objective confirmation.

Regarding ongoing claims of political favoritism, the church stated that no specific evidence has been presented to support such assertions. It noted that restrictions remain in place affecting the use of legally acquired facilities for religious purposes, which it stated is inconsistent with claims of preferential treatment.

The statement further noted that any assessment of political and religious interaction would benefit from consistent standards applied equally across all religious organisations, including Christian, Buddhist, and Catholic institutions, using the same methods of review.

According to the church, the purpose of clarifying its position is to support transparency and factual verification through consistent and impartial procedures.
