With the combination of cutting edge technology from your local MedSpa in Denver and a few pro tips, your spray tan will look more natural and last longer.

Sunless tanning is a great alternative to sunbathing that allows you to obtain a golden glow without harmful UV exposure. While you can apply over-the-counter sunless tanning solutions at home, there’s no beating the results you’ll get with a professional spray tan at our MedSpa in Denver.

Although spray tan sessions are quite affordable, taking a few extra steps before and after will extend the results and protect your investment.

What is Spray Tanning?

Spray tanning is a process that involves applying a formulation of Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) and other ingredients to the skin’s surface via a fine mist. The DHA reacts with the amino acids present on your skin to darken the cells to a tan or bronze hue. Additional ingredients include skin conditioners, propellants, and stabilizers.

The artificial tanning solution isn’t a dye. It’s a naturally occurring, vegetable-based carbohydrate that gives you a sun-kissed glow as the result of a chemical reaction.

These substances used for sunless tanning are safe and effective, and the results are temporary. Your tan will last for up to 10 days, depending on how well you prepare your skin and care for it after your session, the quality of the tanning product and equipment, and the skill of your tanning tech. The Benefits of Sunless Tanning

The biggest benefit of spray tanning is the ability to achieve a natural-looking glow without contributing to premature aging from sun exposure. That’s right. No more sweating and baking in the sun for hours or looking weathered and worn before your time.

In addition, sunless tanning is:

  • Fast. Just choose your shade and see the full results within a few hours of leaving our MedSpa.
  • Long-lasting. With a quality product and solid aftercare, your results will last for at least a week before you need a touchup.
  • Even. There are no strap marks, streaks, or gaps in your tan.
  • Safe. You’ll cut your risk of skin cancer and the sun damage that contributes to discolorations, wrinkles, and crepiness.
  • Slimming. Your golden glow will make you appear slimmer and healthier overall.

Bear in mind that a spray tan doesn’t act as sunscreen. You can still face the ill effects of too much sun exposure, so take the necessary precautions whenever you’re going to be outdoors for an extended period of time.

Three Ways to Make Your Spray Tan Last Longer

You don’t have to wait for beach season to get started. The main advantage of spray tanning is year-round availability regardless of the weather.

These three tips will help you get the most for your money.

1. Prepare Your Skin in Advance

Your skin should be as smooth and problem-free as possible before you get a spray tan. If you use waxing services, get it done at least 48 hours before your tanning appointment. You should also get those mani-pedis out of the way a day or two before your appointment. Shave at least 24 hours in advance, and exfoliate thoroughly the night before your session.

Make sure to complete any skincare treatments at least a week before your tanning appointment. It’s good to provide a solid foundation, but you don’t want to get a spray tan when your skin is sensitive or healing from a procedure.

Don’t wear any moisturizers, lotions, or deodorants to your appointment as these could interfere with the sunless tanning process and affect the solution’s ability to adhere to your skin properly. The same goes for anti-aging serums, anti-acne products, perfumes or other scents.

You’ll want to wear loose, dark-colored clothing and footwear that won’t interfere with the solution after your tanning session. That includes foregoing socks and tight-fitting undergarments that could cause lines to appear.

2. Choose the Right Shade and Formulation for Your Skin

You won’t need more than one session to achieve a darker color. Spray tans just don’t work that way. The shade you choose is fairly close to the results you’ll get, but keep in mind that the final color depends on how the product reacts with your own PH.

Your tanning technician will help you choose the right shade for your complexion or desired results. The formulation will depend upon the condition of your skin. For example, those with dry skin may want a formulation that improves hydration.

3. Nurture Your Skin Between Sessions

Next to providing your technician with the best possible canvas for your sun-kissed look, aftercare is the key to prolonging your spray tan.

When you do shave, make sure that the shaving products don’t contain any mineral oils or other ingredients that will affect your tan. Use a new, sharp razor as a dull blade can remove some of the color. Spray tan solutions only darken the surface skin cells, so removing them will cause your tan to fade faster. That means it’s also important to alter your skincare routine to avoid excessive exfoliation. Use gentle, water-based cleansers and shower gels. Avoid loofahs, buff puffs, and other skin exfoliating products. Use a microfiber cloth or silicone bath scrunchie instead. Wait for at least eight hours before your first shower after a new spray tan.

You probably won’t need much makeup with a natural glow, but do make sure that your use water-based products, both for makeup and makeup remover. Do make sure to moisturize your skin with a water-based product daily to keep it looking hydrated, fresh and glowing. Avoid anything that contains oil or alcohol.

Make sure to pat your skin dry after cleansing or showering, but avoid long showers and saunas. If you do like to soak in a hot tub or take a dip in the pool or ocean, limit the amount of time your skin is exposed to saltwater and chlorine.

To keep the look fresh throughout the year, schedule touchups sessions every 7 – 10 days or so. You can freshen the look between sessions with a self-tanner after a few days.
