The Department of International Trade Promotion or DITP, under the Ministry of Commerce announces the success of the first ever online content market dedicated to a specific genre – the ‘Y-Series’ and ‘Y-Movies’.

The event was launched by Jurin Laksanawisit, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce as part of his mission to position Thailand as a hub of digital content in the region,

‘Y’ series and movies are most often characterized as romantic comedies featuring a young male couple. In recent years, they have built up a strong audience in Taiwan, Indonesia, the Philippines and Latin America, with a total market value of over 1,000 million Baht.

Thailand is a pioneer of the genre, and has become the number one producer of ‘Y’ content in Asia. The combination of attractive characters, talented actors, and creative writing has affirmed Thailand’s position as a leader in entertainment production.

After identifying the opportunities for ‘Y’ content in the international market, the DITP held an on-line market 29-30 June 2021.

  • 10 Thai content producers participated.
  • 158 on-line meetings were held
  • 360 million Baht of revenue was generated
  • Content producers report a significant level of interest from Japan, Taiwan and Vietnam.

9Naa Production Co., Ltd. will provide 3 Y-Series, and 2 feature films, with another Y-Series in development.

Hollywood (Thailand) Co., Ltd. signed a co-production deal with a Philippines-based company to produce a new Y-series.

Studio Wabi Sabi Co., Ltd. is in negotiations with a broadcaster in Japan, and is in talks regarding sales in the U.S.

The ‘Y’ genre originated in Japan as romance novels that featured a young male couple. These novels built up a strong readership among women readers in their early 20s. Thai authors created their own ‘Y’ novels, and these were soon adapted into television series. Their popularity has been boosted by a strong and active following on social media, which has created a number of new young Thai stars. The series have increasingly found audiences across the region, and are now spreading internationally.
