South Jersey-based VSA Prospecting officially turned 20 years old this month and the company celebrated in style, treating employees to a food truck and desserts during a festive late-afternoon party on the office parking lot.
Valerie Schlitt, VSA’s founder and CEO, calls the company’s 20-year (and counting!) success story “remarkable,” given its humble beginnings.
Ms. Schlitt started the company in August 2001 in the family room of her Camden County, N.J. home with two friends as employees, six phone lines, and an elder law attorney as her only client. Two decades later, VSA is recognized as a best-in-class lead generation and appointment-setting firm, boasting high-profile clients around the world and more than 100 employees, with offices in South Jersey and Philadelphia.
VSA has served 888 clients over its first 20 years. Its employees have made more than 3 million calls, set more than 60,000 sales appointments, and helped clients close more than $120 million in new business.
The company specializes in setting sales appointments for clients with complex offerings—particularly those in the healthcare, education, manufacturing/logistics, and technology sectors.
“I’m floored that I’ve built something like this—I can hardly believe we’re 20 years old and going strong. It really is incredible to me,” says Ms. Schlitt. “But there’s no way anybody does these kinds of things on their own. There have been so many dedicated, amazing people along the way who have helped grow VSA with their great ideas and commitment and passion.”
With an MBA from the Wharton School and a resume that included marketing management positions and consulting roles at multiple large corporations, Ms. Schlitt already had an extensive business background when she first decided to start her own company. But she has acknowledged she didn’t have a long-term vision at the outset of VSA, “or even a short-term vision.”
“VSA started simply as an idea and has grown to become a presence,” she says. “A presence in our community, in each of our employee’s lives, and across the country within our industry.”
Ms. Schlitt was quick to share the credit with her co-workers—past and present—during the 20th anniversary celebration.
“Thanks to all of you for making us what we are today,” she told her employees. “We would not be here without everybody. There’s not one person, I mean it. Now, here’s to another 20 years!”
