Meet Nevermet – Created by Cheerio, it’s the First VR Dating App for iPhone

Cheerio launches Nevermet—a VR dating app for your phone, destined to become the Tinder for the metaverse.

As now the majority of new couples are meeting online, a new and uncommon app comes to the fore. Enter Nevermet. It’s the latest kind of “limitless” experience making love connections more accessible for people through avatars and VR. The brainchild of co-founders Cam Mullen and Solaris Nite, Nevermet offers to redefine how avatars connect to form meaningful relationships. Mullen and Nite previously launched three Social VR apps together, each of which has tens of thousands of users on the Oculus App Store.

The team behind Nevermet launched Couch, a social VR app for watching YouTube together, Somewhere, a social game that tests geography skills, and Cheerio, a social VR app to make friends. They quickly discovered that users, in great numbers, were using their apps to find love relationships and even tie the knot. Cam Mullen, the CEO of Cheerio says, “The pandemic opened the door for people to form friendships on our apps, and thankfully, they quickly found another use for us. They have amply proven the concept, and it’s not beyond reason that being first to market with such a phenomenal user ranking puts us in the running to be the number one VR dating app.”

According to a Qualcomm investor meeting in 2021, over ten-million people have purchased the Oculus Quest headset (now branded as, “Meta Quest”). Among this audience are tens of thousands of digital, avatar couples going on out-of-this-world dates. VR couples are riding centaurs on the moon, going to dance parties, playing games together, and “NETFLIX and chilling,” building truly meaningful relationships, even as they’re on opposite sides of the globe.

The problem is, it’s hard to find a VRBF or a VRGF (ahem, a “virtual reality boyfriend / girlfriend”). Walking up to an avatar in a digital world, just like in the real world, is nerve wracking! It’s even tougher when one doesn’t know the gender or age of the other person, if they’re single, or if there’s anything in common. As Tinder made it easier for people looking for a relationship to find each other in the real world, Nevermet wants to make it easier in VR and the Metaverse. Nevermet is focused on enabling romantic relationships in VR, but users who are looking to make friends are also welcomed.

So how does it work? It’s just like Tinder, Hinge, Bumble, or Grindr, but the key difference is instead of posting content of yourself, users post content of their avatar -- no human faces allowed. A profile (which must be approved by the moderation team), can only showcase an avatar. After creating a profile and setting the age and gender filters, users swipe on potential love interests. If there’s a match, they can then text to coordinate a meet up for a VR Date. One thing’s for sure: Nevermet isn’t a dating app based on natural looks. Appearance is off the table, and avatar movements, style and the sound of one’s voice takes the floor. Be authentic with words, and as Nevermet puts it, “…play ping pong, ride unicorns, and go to Paris, all on your first date.”
One Nevermet enthusiast said, “I love how VR is becoming a middle ground for online couples that can’t be together physically but don’t exactly want to be stuck behind the walls of a text.”

Another happy user said, “My husband and I met in VR Chat. We fell in love with each other's voices which I think was very wholesome. We went on VR dates until I moved to be with him eight months later. We've been married for nine months, and I couldn't be happier.”

Nevermet has secured investments from Adam Draper’s fund, Boost VC, and Greg Castle’s fund, Anorak Ventures. Draper said, “We’re excited about the creative ways the Nevermet team is making meaningful connections in Social VR, and we like how they genuinely put their community and user safety first." To that end, Nevermet’s website has a Safety Center and their app provides moderation tools to give users control over their experience.
