Conidia Bioscience Issues Alert to Users and Suppliers of Fuel

Egham,United Kingdom - July 20, 2022 /PressCable/

Today, Conidia Bioscience issued an urgent alert to users or suppliers of middle distillate fuels, such as diesel. Its statement was published on its website to raise awareness of the diesel bug, a growing threat within the fuel itself.

Recent modifications to fuel, such as the addition of biodiesel, increase the likelihood that it will affect businesses, despite its obvious environmental benefits. Unchecked, it can cause operational problems and severe corrosion. This results in a large hole in diesel tanks and an even larger hole in wallets.

Diesel bug is a microorganism or group of microorganisms that grows on fuels. It includes bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi. They consume the fuel’s hydrocarbons and produce biomass, biofilms, and harmful byproducts.

These microorganisms can thrive in even the tiniest amounts of water, often resulting from condensation, and at the interface between fuel and water, where they can form biomass mats. By producing biofilm, they can also coat surfaces and “climb” up storage tank walls.

There are microbes, such as bacteria, yeasts, and fungi, everywhere. They require minute amounts of water and food to proliferate and can be found almost everywhere, including in diesel fuel. As soon as fuel leaves the refinery’s sterile environment, it is exposed to these microorganisms. As a result of consuming even minute amounts of water, they develop into diesel bugs.

Diesel bug microbes prefer to inhabit the interface between fuel and water, feeding on the fuel while residing in the water. They tend to “hide” in the lower flow areas of a fuel system, where the absence of turbulence allows them to thrive in relative safety. The fast response of Conidia means engineers no longer have to send diesel fuel samples to the lab for analysis, so there’s no more downtime or shipping costs. And because FUELSTAT® only tests for diesel bug, there’s no risk of misleading results.
