The Founder of The Elderlaw Firm in Greensboro, NC, said he had been moved to make a number of statements over Medicaid based on the number of clients he had spoken to that were not up to speed on the subject.

He commented: "One of the biggest misperceptions is confusing Medicaid with Medicare. The former is used to pay for long-term care in nursing homes, while Medicare is health insurance that provides only short-term and limited coverage for care in a nursing home."

Toman said another major myth he was keen to nail was that most people believed Medicaid was solely for impoverished people.

"There are certain financial limitations, but many will be surprised they could apply for Medicaid. The best advice is to seek an attorney specialized in Medicaid to learn more about the process and what they could be eligible for.

He said that planning for Medicaid was one that few took seriously. "The later you plan, the more limited options are available. Some ignore the process until it's too late."

The misconception that is the undoing of most people is that they believe the time is never right to plan for Medicaid. He concluded: "There's never a wrong time to begin Medicaid planning.''

“You can start even if you or your loved one are years away from needing long-term out-of-home care. Or you can begin planning after a loved one is already in a nursing home facility.

He concluded: "Rather than listen to relatives or third parties on what Medicaid entails, I would suggest they seek immediate guidance from an estate planning and elder law attorney to know exactly where they stand on financial assistance from Medicaid."
